Perma-Fix Environmental awarded new contract.ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1996--Perma-Fix Environmental Services The various combinations of scientific, technical, and advisory activities (including modification processes, i.e., the influence of manmade and natural factors) required to acquire, produce, and supply information on the past, present, and future states of space, atmospheric, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :PESI PESI Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc ) Tuesday announced that it completed treatment of approximately 2,200 drums of mixed waste in its $1.2 million mobile mixed waste treatment project using the Perma-Fix Process(tm) at Fernald, Ohio. Simultaneously, the company has announced that it has been awarded an additional contract valued at approximately $400,000 by FERMCO FERMCO Fernald Environmental Restoration Management Company , the facility operator for the U.S. Department of Energy, to treat additional mixed waste streams using the Perma-Fix Process(tm) at the Fernald, Ohio facility. The mixed waste was generated during uranium processing operations at the DOE facility near Fernald, Ohio. The facility is now operated by Fernald Environmental Restoration Management Corp. (FERMCO), a DOE prime contractor. Mixed waste is classified as both low-level radioactive and hazardous, requiring expert handling and disposal. Under the Federal Facility Compliance Act (FFCAct), FERMCO has developed a Site Treatment Plan (STP STP or standard temperature and pressure, standard conditions for measurement of the properties of matter. The standard temperature is the freezing point of pure water, 0°C; or 273.15°K;. ) that specifies a Preferred Option for each of several mixed waste streams at Fernald. The Perma-Fix Process(tm), which will be used to treat the waste, meets the requirements for mobile stabilization as Fernald's Ohio Preferred Option in the STP. The Perma-Fix Process(tm) will render the hazardous component of the mixed waste non-hazardous, qualifying it to be managed as only a low-level radioactive material radioactive material Radiation A substance that contains unstable–radioactive–atoms that give off radiation as they decay. See Radioactive decay. . By implementing the STP at the Fernald site, FERMCO has taken the lead role in complying with the requirements of the FFCAct. The Perma-Fix Process(tm) is PESI's proprietary mobile treatment technology that converts hazardous, low-level radioactive waste Noun 1. low-level radioactive waste - (medicine) radioactive waste consisting of objects that have been briefly exposed to radioactivity (as in certain medical tests) , that cannot be disposed of due to hazardous characteristics, into a non-hazardous material that remains radioactive and can then be disposed of as a radioactive material. Dr. Louis F. Centofanti, Perma-Fix president, stated that he: "was elated with the results of the initial contract, in that it was completed ahead of schedule and on budget, while demonstrating the technology on a large scale. These results and the award of the new contract proves the Perma-Fix technology offers the best option for the vast quantities of mixed waste being stored and generated at not only U.S. Department of Energy facilities, but at many commercial facilities." Centofanti further stated that, "unlike more exotic proposed processes, such as vitrification vit·ri·fi·ca·tion n. The process of using heat and fusion to convert dental porcelain to a glassy substance. vitrification , molten metal baths, etc., the Perma-Fix Process(tm) is simple, safe, creates little or no volume increase, reduces radioactive emissions through densification, and is the most cost effective option. We feel the technology will play a major role in DOE's cleanup efforts and reduce the agency's predicted disposal costs." Perma-Fix Environmental Services Inc. provides hazardous, mixed and industrial waste management, environmental engineering and consulting services Noun 1. consulting service - service provided by a professional advisor (e.g., a lawyer or doctor or CPA etc.) service - work done by one person or group that benefits another; "budget separately for goods and services" and maintains offices in nine major U.S. cities. The company is widely recognized for meeting customer needs with technologically advanced alternatives to traditional landfill and incinerations methods.
