Perle Systems (NASDAQ:PERL) (TSE:PL), a leading provider of networking products for IP and e-business access, today announced plans to provide $US 1.3 million worth of connectivity hardware and technical support for MFS MFS Medicare fee schedule  Network Technologies, a systems integrator specializing in facilities-based communications projects. MFS is managing the technical integration of the New Jersey Toll Road Consortium Project, a $US 500 million project implementing the E-ZPass(SM) toll collection system throughout five toll-road authorities located in New Jersey and Delaware.

MFS Network Technologies chose the Perle Specialix RIO, a state-of-the-art serial connectivity solution, to provide long-distance serial communication within its toll road networks. The Perle Specialix RIO solution will be used to link intelligent peripheral devices See peripheral.

, such as magnetic card readers, toll terminals, and automatic vehicle identification equipment, with E-ZPass(SM) host computers for activities such as pass detection, vehicle classification, and toll collection. Perle Specialix was the only vendor able to provide MFS Network Technologies with a solution that enabled data transfer between wireless electronic devices and host computers over distances greater than half a mile.

"We chose to partner with Perle Specialix because their expertise in serial connectivity allowed us to save thousands of dollars in hardware expenses," said Tom Kollar, project engineer, MFS Network Technologies. "Building a highly efficient remote serial connectivity application will increase the life-span of our host computers. It will also provide more flexibility to the Consortium in their efforts to implement E-ZPass and improve the speed of toll-collection."

The Perle/MFS application enhances standard serial connectivity protocol to carry wireless data over longer distances than normally possible with RS232. Specifically, an intelligent controller receives RS232 communications signals from the peripheral devices connected to it, converts the data to a special proprietary serial connectivity protocol, and transmits it across fiber optic connections that extend its reach to greater than a half a mile. This enhanced capacity for long-distance connectivity is advantageous in the toll road environment, where the effects of pollution and vehicle-induced vibration shorten host computers' life spans significantly. The Perle solution allows the Consortium to house the host computers in a protective environment further from the toll road than normally possible, ultimately increasing their life span significantly.

"MFS Network Technologies' choice of Perle as a partner in the Consortium's E-ZPass project underlines our reputation as the leader in serial connectivity solutions," said DeAnn Dalry, director, sales & marketing of Perle Specialix. "Our expertise in serial connectivity will help MFS and the Consortium implement E-ZPass in the most efficient possible manner."

The MFS Network Technologies/New Jersey Toll Road Consortium project began in March 1998 and will be completed in stages through the end of the year 2001. Perle and MFS Network Technologies have previously collaborated successfully on similar projects in South America South America, fourth largest continent (1991 est. pop. 299,150,000), c.6,880,000 sq mi (17,819,000 sq km), the southern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and Canada.

About RIO

RIO is a specialized serial connectivity solution for medium to large-scale applications. It provides up to 128 serial devices via a single server slot, and can be expanded to a total of 512 ports per server. Ports are added via 8 and 16 port modules that can be supplied with a wide range of serial interfaces. RIO provides an exceptionally high throughput - using unique architecture that provides the host card and each port module with four 10 Mbps bus channels. RIO supports fault tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  cabling, which will re-route data in the case of cable disruption and also supports connection of a standby host in case of server down time.
