Mounted inside the mainframe server cabinet, the Perle 833 RAS provides a dial up link between the maintenance LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  at the user's site and Bull's Remote Maintenance facilities, enabling centrally located Bull service technicians to service customers located anywhere in the world.

"We consider the 833 Access Server a very important element of our remote maintenance strategy," says Jim Smith There are several famous people with the name Jim Smith, including:
  • Jim Smith, a football (soccer) player and later manager, currently in charge of Oxford United.
  • Jim Smith, former NFL and USFL wide receiver
, the manager of Bull's Service Processor design team for new systems in Phoenix, Arizona Phoenix /ˈfiːˌnɪks/ (English: Phoenix, Navajo: Hoozdo, lit. "the place is hot", Western Apache: Fiinigis) is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. . "Perle offered the most flexible remote access solution and had all the functionality we required. They also provided excellent engineering support."

With the Perle 833 Access Server, potential network problem calls are automatically routed from the Perle 833 to one of Bull's remote maintenance facilities in Phoenix, Arizona or Les Clayes, France. The Perle 833 then provides Bull's maintenance technicians with secure dial-in access to the maintenance LAN at the customers site, which in turn provides access to the mainframe, and all its components. This allows Bull technicians to quickly and effectively diagnose and resolve problems for customers running mission-critical applications.

While security and ease of upgrade were also significant considerations, Perle's worldwide support was the key factor in the design team's decision. "Access to Perle engineers in the same or adjacent time zones in England, France and North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  was very important to Bull," says Sean O'Donovan, vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Perle.

Bull operates in more than 100 countries with offerings including consulting and systems integration, infrastructure and managed services, with a focus on the Internet and e-commerce. Global revenue in 1999 was $4.3 billion.
