Periphonics and Sixbell Supply Technology for Prepaid Wireless Services to Telefonica Companies in Chile and Brazil.

BOHEMIA, N.Y. and SANTIAGO, Chile--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1999--

Periphonics Corporation, a leading worldwide provider of products and services for call processing In telecommunication, the term call processing has the following meanings:
  1. The sequence of operations performed by a switching system from the acceptance of an incoming call through the final disposition of the call.
solutions used in Telecom Enhanced Network Services An umbrella term for advanced communications services. Until the mid-1990s, everybody knew what "enhanced services" meant. They were voicemail, "one number follow me," prepaid calling card or voice-actuated call control, all offered by a carrier or service provider in a circuit-switched  and Computer Telephony Integration Computer Telephony Integration - Computer Telephone Integration , announced today that its VPS/is family of Interactive Voice Response (IVR (Interactive Voice Response) An automated telephone information system that speaks to the caller with a combination of fixed voice menus and data extracted from databases in real time. ) systems has been selected by Telefonica International's subsidiaries in Chile and Brazil for wireless prepaid calling services. Sixbell, Periphonics' Chilean partner, provided enabling technology and implementation for the prepaid services known as Amistar in Chile, and MoviStar Amigo in Brazil.

Telefonica provides prepaid services to some 1,500,000 subscribers via its operating companies Telerj, Telebahia, Telerguipe, and Telest. Telecentro Oeste provides service to some 350,000 subscribers via its operating companies Teleacre, Teleron, Telemat, Telegoias, Telebrasilia, and Telems. Startel, Chile has an estimated customer base of some 500,000 subscribers.

The technology platforms installed at each carrier incorporate a highly flexible prepaid software package developed by Sixbell and Periphonics IVR technology enabled for Signaling System 7 (SS7) networks. Pablo Caram, International Commercial Manager at Sixbell, says, "The platforms combine high performance and flexibility with excellent economies. Our unique integration of Periphonics technology, SS7 signaling and mobile switching capabilities yields a price-performance combination unrivaled in Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. ."

Thanks to a rapid turnaround from delivery to production, the systems generate an early return on investment. According to Caram, fast evolving telecoms markets in Latin America demand not only high quality technology, but also extremely short lead times to service introduction. "This highlyompetitive market rewards speed and agility in a vendor as much as it rewards technological savvy," said Caram of the Latin American telecoms market.

Pre-paid cellular services are an important competitive weapon as well as a revenue creator. The product addresses a new segment of cell phone users that would otherwise not qualify for traditional credit-based services. Prepaid also eliminates collection problems because it requires payment up front.

According to Hugh Gilenson, Periphonics' Regional Sales Manager for Latin America, prepaid is one of many enhanced services that can be operated on Periphonics' platform. "The advantage of using the Periphonics IVR as the technology platform for the prepaid cellular package is significant economies of scale." According to Gilenson, "Customers use the Periphonics platform not only for prepaid cellular services, but also for a variety of customer care applications. The platform's ability to accommodate multiple services gives customers a fast return on investment and efficient utilization of resources."

Pre-paid services based on technology from Periphonics and Sixbell are currently offered by Startel (Chile), Telefonica (Brazil), and Telecentro Oeste (Brazil). Startel and Telefonica Brazil are owned by Telefonica Internacional, the holding company established by Telefonica of Spain to operate its Latin American subsidiaries.
