Perini Building Co. Delivers the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Budget and Ahead of Schedule.
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2003
Nineteen hundred years ago, the Romans took 10 years to build the original Colosseum. Perini Building Co. delivered the $95 million Caesars Palace Colosseum Showroom in 13 months -- six weeks ahead of schedule and within budget, under a contract with Park Place Entertainment Corp. -- the parent company for Caesars Palace and 26 other casino resorts around the world. Perini Building Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Perini Corp. (AMEX: PCR).
The Colosseum at Caesars Palace seats 4,100 people. Its circular design provides guests with an intimate theater experience, with the farthest seat no more than 120 feet from the stage. On March 25, 2003, The Colosseum at Caesars Palace opened its doors as the home to a three-year run of A NEW DAY ... featuring Celine Dion, by DRAGONE and presented by Chrysler.
The Colosseum's exterior resembles the original Roman structure. The interior, however, is in stark contrast to the open air, dirt floor ancient amphitheater. The Colosseum Showroom is fully loaded with amenities such as 4,100 plush red velvet seats, imported stone flooring, soft lighting and a 22,000 sq. ft. stage within arms reach of front row guests.
The theater has high-tech acoustics and North America's largest light-emitting diode (LED) screen. The 33 ft. tall by 110 ft. wide screen creates the illusion of three-dimensional stage scenery. The theater is designed for superior sound. It has over 100 strategically placed self-powered speakers and is wrapped in an acoustical liner to eliminate all sound reverberation. Even the ceiling is covered in deep red acoustical lining to enhance the theater's acoustics.
Constructing the elliptical structure in 13 months posed some unique challenges. The construction site was squeezed between Caesars Palace, one of the world's largest resorts, and the non-stop Las Vegas Strip. The design of the facility took place during construction. The architect is located in Oklahoma and the designer lives in Canada. "We were downloading design specifications as we built. To maintain our aggressive pace, daily, even hourly conference calls were typical," said Mike Nunn, project executive for Perini Building Co.
Perini was able to jumpstart the construction schedule by using in-house surveying engineer Jay Woods. "Jay was out in front of everyone. Months before we had drawings, he surveyed the site and accurately determined the layout points of the structure. This allowed us to plan our construction strategy months in advance of design specifications," said Nunn.
Another time-saving measure Perini utilized was a secant pile system instead of a traditional structural foundation. Perini excavated the site after drilling and placing the piles. The piles serve as the foundation as well as the interior wall of the basement.
