Perform direct slitting/winding of stretch film rolls.

A new shaftless turret slitter/winder makes individual stretch-film rolls 4-, 5- or 6-up directly in-line with film production, thus saving the secondary step of rewinding from a master roll. The novel concept behind the Winder 3000 from SML Extrusion Technology Inc., Kennesaw, Ga., is that instead of winding one long core supported by turrets on either end, it winds four to six individual cores, held on the ends by three to five thin supporting arms. The supporting arms move laterally on a central traverse to accommodate different roll lengths and can wind 2- or 3-in. cores. Empty cores are stored in vertical magazines and drop into place as the turret indexes.

The Winder 3000 winds 300-meter rolls of stretch film every 30 sec or 600 m/min. Turrets index in less than 2 sec. It winds with two contact rollers on opposite sides of the building rolls--a driven contact roller on the cutter side and an auxiliary contact roller on the back side to synchronize core start-up speed and drive finished rolls during indexing.
