Today Pepperidge Farm Pepperidge Farm was founded in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin, who named the brand for a property her family owned in Connecticut (which itself was named for the pepperidge tree, Nyssa sylvatica). In 1961, the company was purchased by Campbell's. , Incorporated dedicated its new, state-of-the-art, $72-million bakery plant in Bloomfield, Connecticut Bloomfield is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The new plant will produce breads, rolls and stuffing to meet the growing demand for Pepperidge Farm fresh baked goods in the Northeastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Leading the ceremonies at the new facility were Pepperidge Farm President Mark Sarvary and Doug Conant, President and Chief Executive Officer of Campbell Soup Company Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) (also known as Campbell's) is a well-known American producer of canned soups and related products. Campbell's products are sold in 120 countries around the world. It is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey. , corporate parent of Pepperidge Farm. The approximately 75 guests included Pepperidge Farm and Campbell executives, corporate neighbors from Bloomfield, state and local officials and representatives of firms that helped construct the plant.

Featured speakers were Messrs. Sarvary and Conant, Plant Manager Bill Livingstone and Bloomfield Mayor Sydney Schulman. Highlights included the ribbon cutting to open the facility and a special Pepperidge Farm tradition - the planting of a Pepperidge pepperidge: see black gum.  tree. The tree was dedicated to former Pepperidge Farm President David L. Albright, who was instrumental in the plant's development and launch.

"It is hard to believe that in just 11 months, this site was transformed from an empty field into a plant baking extraordinary bread," said Mark Sarvary. "It is a credit to the outstanding team effort that took place between the people of Pepperidge Farm, Campbell Soup Company, the Town of Bloomfield, the State of Connecticut, and our many excellent partner firms. A fantastic job by all involved."

Its state-of-the-art equipment and highly efficient systems will enable Pepperidge Farm to deliver products of the highest quality for consumers, and in a manner that is cost effective for Campbell."

The Bloomfield plant has six-and-a-half acres under roof, and 265,000 square feet of floor space, located on a forty-acre property. A highly automated, state-of-the-art facility, Bloomfield replaces the company's former Norwalk bakery, which was phased out in July. The new operation can produce 30 percent more product than its predecessor. Plus, product quality is higher and more consistent--staying true to the company's commitment to provide the freshest, highest quality premium products available today.

Running three shifts six day a week, the new plant will contain four production lines and employ approximately 275 people. It is currently running one dry line for croutons and stuffing, and two fresh bread lines: one for the company's family of Swirl breads, and one for Farmhouse, Natural Whole Grain, and other varieties. The plant will be fully operational when the roll production line starts up November 1.
