Waldo Semon dies at 100 The man who brought the world vinyl and about 120 other inventions died May 26 at a nursing home in Hudson, Ohio. Waldo Semon was 100. Semon began his work as a chemical pioneer at B.F. Goodrich in 1926. It was during his first assignment with the company that he fell upon the formula to make vinyl, one of the most widely used plastics in the world today. For his efforts in making synthetic rubber for the U.S. military in World War II, Semon earned the !944 Charles Goodyear Medal for research leading to commercial butadiene synthetic rubber.
