Budiman began his career in 1968 as a research officer with the Institute for Research Crops in Bogor, Indonesia. In 1983, he became expert assistant to the junior minister for the development of estate crops. In 1988, Budiman was appointed to his recent position as executive director of Gapkindo, the Rubber Association of Indonesia. During Budiman's tenure with Gapkindo, Indonesia has become the second largest producer of natural rubber in the world.
