Penederm Reports Fourth Quarter and Fiscal 1997 Financial Results; Adds $10 Million Equity Line of Credit.

) today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 1997.

For the year ended December 31, 1997, total revenues increased 210% to $9,005,000 from $2,905,000 in 1996. Net loss was $12,717,000 ($1.59 per share) in 1997, compared to a net loss of $7,643,000 ($1.05 per share) in 1996. Cash and investments totaled $5,621,000 at December 31, 1997.

Product sales increased to $6,341,000 in 1997, compared to $2,258,000 in 1996, primarily due to the commercial launch of the Company's first two pharmaceutical products, Mentax and Avita. License fee revenues increased from $647,000 in 1996 to $2,664,000 in 1997 due to the timing and scope of partnering arrangements. In the fourth quarter the Company announced partnering arrangements with a division of Mylan Laboratories, Inc. for the co-promotion of Mentax to primary care physicians and with a subsidiary of Allergan Incorporated for the distribution of its Mentax and Avita products in Central and South America South America, fourth largest continent (1991 est. pop. 299,150,000), c.6,880,000 sq mi (17,819,000 sq km), the southern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. .

For the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1997, revenues were $2,214,000, compared to revenues of $943,000 in the fourth quarter of 1996. Net loss in the fourth quarter 1997 was $4,745,000 ($.58 per share), compared to a net loss of $1,726,000 ($.24 per share) in the fourth quarter of 1996.
