Peerless joins forces with Digital for new multiprotocol network laser printer family.

EL SEGUNDO El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1996--Peerless Systems Corp., a leader in digital document software and hardware technology, Tuesday announced that it has provided Digital Equipment Corp. with key technologies for its LN17 family of network laser printers.

Digital's LN17 family of printers includes Peerless' patented Memory Reduction Technology (MRT MRT,
n manual resistance technique, a treatment method used during the acute and recovery phases to relieve pain and rehabilitate the body's tissues and muscles.
), PeerlessPage Imaging Operating System operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
, PSIO PSIO Public Service Integrity Office (Canada)  network interface and advanced printer controller designs and modular architecture -- enabling a 17 ppm printer with open connectivity to PC, Macintosh and workstation computing environments.

The robust feature set provided by Peerless has yielded a customizable, high-speed network monochrome printer that outputs documents at 1200x600 dpi resolution with just 2MB of required memory and incorporates advanced paper handling features and superior networking capabilities.

"Peerless' technology, coupled with Digital's renowned networking expertise, has enabled Digital to differentiate itself by providing its customers with the most open printing solution on the market," said Tom Ruffolo, vice president of marketing at Peerless Systems Corp.

"The LN17 family is the most recent of several printer development projects we have completed with Digital, including the award-winning 600dpi DEClaser 5100 printer and the 1200 dpi upgrade version."

The LN17 family's controller is based on the Peerless-designed Intel 82961KD coprocessor coprocessor

Additional processor used in some personal computers to perform specialized tasks such as extensive arithmetic calculations or processing of graphical displays.
and Intel i960 JD50 RISC processor RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution. . The KD coprocessor enables MRT and serves as a performance-enhancing graphics accelerator A display adapter that performs a specialized set of graphics functions to render an image on screen. Today, all display adapters provide basic rendering functions in hardware, but many have graphics processing units (GPUs) that are sophisticated computers. .

The JD50, coupled with Peerless ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  technology, reduces the amount of memory (the largest contributor to controller costs) required for high-resolution (1200x600 dpi) and duplex printing The ability to print on both sides of the paper. . Peerless' turnkey controller includes a modular architecture that allows Digital to modify specifications to suit its customers' needs -- minimizing development and manufacturing costs.

MRT, which combines the PeerlessPage Imaging Operating System with Peerless' advanced memory reduction and image compression techniques and ASIC technology, facilitates a controller design that enables Digital and other OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers to achieve an exceptional performance and quality advantage over competitors without the costs associated with added memory.

Peerless also worked with Digital to enable paper handling and finishing capabilities, making the LN17 family of printers one of the first of a new generation of printers to include features commonly included with high-end printing products.

The LN17 family of printers is one of the first to include a completely secured, multiple output mailbox ensuring confidentiality. Also, the mailbox can be used as a multibin document collator (1) A punch card machine that merges two decks of cards into one or more stacks.

(2) A utility program that merges records from two or more files into one file.
similar to those on office copiers. Other paper-handling capabilities include the world's smallest user-installable duplex option, for easy two-sided printing; an offset catch tray; and an advanced hard disk for forms, fonts and macro storage.

Peerless technologies also ensure automatic software compatibility by providing multiple PDLs and fonts in the controller. The LN17 and LN17ps printers are equipped with PeerlessPrint5E, which includes PJL (Printer Job Language) A printer command language from HP that adds control for individual print jobs and also includes the ability to set printer default settings. See PCL. . Adobe PostScript Level 2 is standard on the LN17ps model and optional on the LN17.

Automatic and widespread printer connectivity is also facilitated in the LN17 printers which leverage Peerless networking technologies and protocols compatible with PC, Macintosh and Windows 95 "plug and play."

The LN17 family of printers includes support for two optional network interface cards (NIC (1) (Network Interface Card) See network adapter. See also InterNIC.

(2) (New Internet Computer) An earlier Linux-based computer from The New Internet Computer Company (NICC), Palo Alto, CA.
) -- Ethernet and LocalTalk. The two NIC cards can easily be added through PSIO (Peerless' Standard Input/Output) which is embedded in PeerlessPage Imaging Operating System.

PeerlessPage supports processing of print jobs through multiple network protocols in addition to automatic sensing and switching as well as interface port selection. PeerlessPage also includes full scalable font support among all I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.
