Revolutionary Imaging Software and Silicon Solution

Enables 4X Performance For Under $400 in the

Next Generation of Tandem Color Printers and Copiers

Peerless Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:PRLS PRLS Puerto Rican and Latino Studies (program of study) ), a leader in embedded imaging solutions, Monday announced an advanced software and hardware solution which will enable low-cost, high-performance embedded controller Controller circuitry built into a device or on the main system board, in contrast with a removable card or module.  solutions for business office tandem color desktop printers and copiers at speeds up to 25 pages per minute.

This revolutionary software and silicon combination will enable controller solutions for 25-page-per-minute color products at a controller cost of under $400. This is a four-times improvement in speed over most color desktop printers with only a moderate increase in controller costs. Monochrome products at speeds of up to 150 pages per minute can also be supported by the impressive bandwidth of the QP1900.

In the spring of 1997, Peerless made news with the announcement of the world's first color laser printer A laser printer that prints in color using four toner cartridges (CMYK) of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The colors are applied one at a time to the drum and are then adhered to the paper. During Fall Seybold '98, Peerless demonstrated SyntheSys, a QP+401 controller solution enabling color solutions at speeds up to 6 pages per minute for under $70.

The key to opening up the high-speed office color market is a tightly integrated imaging system, silicon and hardware design, which supports the new high-speed tandem engines. Peerless believes that the emerging tandem engines will be a prime moving force in the printer industry to deliver the promise of "color at monochrome speeds."

Peerless controller solutions complete the equation by supplying the required horsepower to process multiple concurrent datastreams to optimally feed data to these new high-speed engines.

Today Peerless is raising the bar in terms of the price/performance color solutions for tandem printers and copiers. Peerless is announcing a software solution for the revolutionary QuickPrint 1900 coprocessor coprocessor

The QP1900, when teamed with powerful processors such as MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. , PowerPC or Intel's i960, will provide a simple low-cost, high-performance solution for the emerging tandem market. This two-chip architecture is capable of supporting the rigorous data and performance demands of the new generation high-speed tandem color print engines.

"The adoption of color in the business office market will significantly increase as the cost of color printing declines and the performance of color printing increases. Peerless continues to lead the market in providing the lowest cost, highest performance embedded controller solutions," said Ed Gavaldon, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "We believe the combination of our embedded imaging software and our state-of-the-art silicon technology embodied in the QP1900 will set a new industry benchmark for tandem color printer and copier solutions," Gavaldon added.

The software and QP1900 solution provide a very attractive solution to cost-conscious, yet performance-minded printer OEMs, hungry to tap into the high-growth mainstream business office color printer and copier market. The QP1900 supports bi-level and continuous tone color tone color

. Peerless' imaging technology provides a complete solution, including ease of use and user productivity, while reducing the total processing, memory and component cost for the new class of high-speed color desktop and copier tandem engine products.

The Peerless QP1900 builds on the substantial silicon experience of the company's successful QuickPrint family of coprocessors. Added features for the QP1900 include four integrated independent video pipelines for tandem operation, high-speed synchronous DRAM Synchronous DRAM - Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory  (SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  printer developers with a stable and transportable software platform.

The PeerlessPage object-based imaging system incorporates robust color printing features that offer significant office productivity benefits that include:

-- object-based imaging; -- high-speed industry-standard network interfaces; -- industry-standard color matching; -- MultiPrint send-once-print-many capability, plus support for

advanced paper-handling features; -- multiple tray selection; -- duplexing; -- stapling, punching, jogging, secured output; and -- copying, scanning, print queue management, job accounting and

much more.

With the exception of historical information, the statements set forth above include forward-looking statements that involve risk and uncertainties. The company wishes to caution readers that a number of important factors could cause actual results to differ materially from those in the forward-looking statements. Those factors include the following: the fact that the company's markets are characterized by rapidly changing technology, evolving industry standards and frequent introductions of new products and enhancements, and the company's ability to respond to such changes; fluctuations in OEM shipments which generate the company's license fee revenue; difficulties which the company may experience in completing the development of turnkey designs for OEM customers, its digital photography technology, its integrated multifunction semiconductor solutions or other products; the fact that the multifunction and color markets targeted by the company are at an early stage of development; the highly competitive nature of the markets for the company's products; the company's ability to attract and retain skilled personnel; the company's reliance on third-party suppliers for components used in the company's products; the quarterly variability in the company's bookings and design wins; and the company's reliance on a relatively small number of OEM customers for a large percentage of its revenue. These and other factors which could cause actual results to differ materially from those in the forward-looking statements are also discussed in the company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including its recent filings on Form 10-K Form 10-K
