Peddling Fantasy: Sony Online Entertainment Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) is a game development and game publishing division of Sony that is best known for creating massively multiplayer online games, including EverQuest, EverQuest II, PlanetSide, and Star Wars Galaxies  has given fans of its online fantasy game EverQuest another world to explore. Early this month the company put "Lost Dungeons Dungeons may refer to:
  • the plural form of Dungeon, part of a medieval castle that is either the keep or an underground prison
  • shorthand for Dungeons & Dragons, a fantasy role-playing game
 of Norrath" on store shelves, at a suggested retail price of $30.

EverQuest is called a "massively multi player game" since it lets many players who are widely separated interact in a common place--a fictional land called Norrath. Sony links all those people with its computer servers in the Miramar area of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. . Access to the servers is by subscription. It costs $13 per month.

During peak periods Sony has 118,000 people tapping into its servers. It claims a subscriber base of 430,000.

Sony Online Entertainment is an arm of Sony Pictures. In addition to its San Diego headquarters, Sony Online has studios in Austin, Texas, and St. Louis.

Sony Online has been at work on other projects:

* In June it released the massively multiplayer "Star Wars Galaxies For other uses, see Star Wars Galaxy.

Star Wars Galaxies (abbv. SWG) is a Star Wars themed MMORPG for Microsoft Windows developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts.
: An Empire Divided." Inspired by the "Star Wars" movies. the game is a joint project with San Rafael-based Lucas Arts.

* It is still at work on an improved game called Everquest II
    EverQuest II (EQ2), based upon the popular EverQuest, is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and shipped on November 8, 2004.
    , though its launch has been pushed back to 2004.
