Pearson wins title for Axemen at South Salem meet.

South Eugene's Sarah Pearson ran 5,000 meters in 18:29.4 at Bush Park in Salem to win the individual title by more than 12 seconds at the South Salem South Salem is the name of several places in the United States:

  • South Salem in Ohio
  • South Salem in Westchester County, New York
 Invitational girls cross country meet Saturday.

Teammate Lauren Sharp finished 20th in 19:52.1 as the Axemen placed fourth in the team competition with 107 points.

Jesuit easily won the 18-team meet with 37 points, followed by Crescent Valley with 100. Churchill and Springfield entered incomplete teams in the meet.

Ally Romanko finished fifth in 42:08 and teammates Leah Worthen and Clarice Jones were 17th and 19th, respectively, to lead Marshfield to fourth place at the 24th Prefontaine Memorial Run in Coos Bay Coos Bay (ks), city (1990 pop. 15,076), Coos co., SW Oreg., a port of entry on Coos Bay; founded 1854 as Marshfield, inc. 1874, renamed 1944. .

Roseburg won the 11-team meet with 61 points, followed by Klamath Union with 81, Crater with 98 and Marshfield with 111. Marist was eighth with 171 points.

Boys cross country

Crater easily won the team title with 31 points, followed by the Vikings with 100. Also in the meet were Marshfield (fifth), North Eugene (12th), Reedsport (14th) and Marist (16th).

Kyle Gillette of Phoenix won the 10,000-meter race with a time of 33:52.

Volleyball

Harrisburg won the first two games and then hung on for a 25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12 triumph over visiting Oakridge in a Trico League match.

Morgan Kinley had nine blocks and Claire Duncan added seven kills and 14 assists to lead the winning Eagles. Stephanie Cossette had 13 kills and four blocks for the Warriors.

Candace Knuths had eight kills and Ashley Van Loon loon, common name for migratory aquatic birds found in fresh- and saltwater in the colder parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Becky Goin had 12 kills and Kristina Neet added 10 to lead the Red Devils.

Host Jefferson beat East Linn Christian 25-9, 25-16, 25-12.

Monroe came from behind to beat Waldport 25-22, 16-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-10.

Tasha Helgerson collected 14 blocks and Kendra Snow added eight kills to lead the Irish.

Charlie VanLoon collected eight blocks and six kills to lead Yoncalla to an 18-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-12 comeback win over host Gold Beach in a Big Fir League match.

Krista Meeks had 11 kills and nine blocks and Tess Treinen added seven kills and six blocks to lead the Panthers.

Yoncalla defeated host Pacific in Port Orford, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18. Heather Finney led the Eagles with seven kills.

North Douglas downed host Pacific 25-16, 25-9, 25-21.

Dani Taylor had 11 kills and 10 digs and Alyssa Walker added six blocks and 16 digs to lead North Douglas over host Gold Beach 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-9.

Krista Meeks slammed 13 kills and Jamie Fitzstephens had 10 digs to lead the Panthers.

Mohawk fell 25-12, 25-22, 24-26, 25-17 to Fairview Christian at home in a Mountain West League match.

Jessica Leamen had nine aces and four kills, and Cheri Kisor and Whitney Bigbee had five kills each for Mohawk.

Defending Class 1A state championship Days Creek won all four of its matches at the Triangle Lake Tournament. Mapleton and the host Lakers were both 2-2 in the round-robin event, and McKenzie and Perrydale were 1-3.

Boys soccer

Ashland scored three times in the final 20 minutes to beat host Thurston 3-1.

Kayla Stewart scored the only goal for the Colts, off an assist from sister Holly Stewart.

Water polo

Drew Hankins had seven goals, and Aaron Minster and Ben Malcolm added six each to lead the North Eugene boys to a 21-6 victory over Redmond at River Road Pool.

Bridget Duggan scored five goals, Amanda Hoffman had four goals and Rachelle Stice contributed three to lead the North Eugene girls to a 15-0 win over Redmond at River Road Pool.
