Patton at Bay: The Lorraine Campaign, 1944

Patton at Bay: The Lorraine Campaign, 1944. John Nelson Richard. Brassey's Inc. 297 pages; black and white photographs: maps; index; $19.95. ($14.96 for AUSA members)

This book explores the lesser-known campaigns fought by Gen. George S. Patton Jr.'s Third Army from November to December 1944 along the FrenchGerman border.

After Patton's sweep across France, terrible weather, rough terrain, dwindling supplies and stiffened German resistance halted him in the Lorraine region of France. Patton's numerous attempts to remain mobile failed to create the momentum he desired. Bickering commanders and poor timing also contributed to Third Army's stagnation. The German offensive in the Ardennes Forrest brought Patton back to life with a daring turn north and drive into Bastogne.

This is an excellent book that fills a gap in Patton's European campaign. Originally published in 1999, it is now in paperback as an AUSA book.
