Pattern followed at Champion.

Negotiators for Champion International Corp. and the Western Council of Lumber, Production and Industrial Workers reached agreement on a new 3-year labor contract covering about 1,600 mill workers at the company's plants in Oregon, Washington, and Montana. According to the union, the economic terms of the settlement followed those it negotiated at Boise Cascade. (See Monthly Labor Review, October 1991, p. 47.)

The contract provides general wage increases of 4 percent retroactive to June 1, 1991, and 3 percent on June I of 1992 and 1993, with the possibility of additional increases in the last 2 years. The additional adjustments depend on whether the contracts with four other lumber companies (DAW Forest Products/wt Forest Products Co.; Georgia Pacific Corp.; Roseburg Forest Products, Inc.; and Williamette Industries, Inc.) provide larger wage increases, after their 1992 negotiations, than did the Champion settlement. The additional increases, if any, would be equal to the difference between the average rate increases at the four companies and the guaranteed 3-percent increases at Champion. (After the June 1991 wage boosts, employees reportedly will earn between $10 and $14 per hour.)

Other terms include a $2 increase (to $24) in the monthly pension rate per year of future service; an additional floating" holiday in 1992; a new 401 (k) plan, with the company matching 25 percent of an employee's investment, up to 3 percent of the employee's gross earnings; effective in June 1992, a 35cent-an-hour increase (to $1.90) in the company's contribution to the health and welfare trust fund, increasing to $2 an hour in June 1993; improvements in paid vacations; and an expansion of funeral leave to include absences for the death of grandchildren.
