Patient issued for reverse-angle X-ray diffraction. (News Briefs).

Patent 6,269,144 was recently issued to NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology.  for a "Method and Apparatus for Diffraction Measurement Using a Scanning X-ray Source." The concept combines the high-energy X-ray diffraction technology that has been developed by NIST during the past 5 years with the unique area-scanned X-ray tube X-ray tube

An electronic device used for the generation of x-rays. X-rays are produced in the x-ray tube by accelerating electrons to a high velocity by an electrostatic field and then suddenly stopping them by collision with a solid body, the so-called
developed by a private company. The technique differs from conventional X-ray scanning systems in that the X-ray source is scanned through a pattern instead of the specimen SPECIMEN. A sample; a part of something by which the other may be known.
     2. The act of congress of July 4, 1836, section 6, requires the inventor or discoverer of an invention or discovery to accompany his petition and specification for a patent with specimens
. The technique is particularly appropriate for rapid determination of texture or identifying the phases present in a specimen.
