Pathways to Artistry Series is a conscientious and thorough effort to introduce young students to the rudiments of stylistic performance. The series consists of three levels of technique books and repertoire books of original compositions by Catherine Rollin. The new Masterworks books (currently for levels 1 and 2) feature "miniature master works" by classical composers including Bartok, Czerny, Diabelli, Gurlitt, Haydn, Kohler and Weber. These new books provide teachers and students repertoire that relates to and reinforces technical skills introduced in the Technique and Repertoire books of the same level.

The Level I Pathways Series, Technique, Repertoire & Masterworks, introduces students to "the 12 Basic Technical Skills." Rollins efforts provide a template for any student to acquire a set of basic physical skills necessary for musically stylistic performance.

Masterworks Book I includes pieces, primarily in five-finger positions, focusing on one or two clearly marked technical elements to polish, a music history timeline and a brief note about the composer. All this information is presented on an uncluttered page that invites the teacher and student to provide further personalized details of technique, form, harmony. Masterworks 2 features the same format as book I and includes works that reinforce the Technique Book 2 scale skills of thumb rolls, thumb and finger pivots, thumb-unders, and legato (Legato Systems, Inc., Mountain View, CA, www.legato.com) A leading provider of storage management and high-availability software founded in 1988 and acquired by EMC Corporation in 2003. The Masterworks books fill a need for artistic information readily accessible to elementary pianists or older transfer students.

I am not aware of another published series that codifies and reinforces a technical/physical vocabulary for young pianists so succinctly. The Pathways to Artistry Series would be a great asset to any college pedagogy class and for young teachers, providing a tremendous "starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point
