Pathways to Art Appreciation: A Source Book for Media & Methods.

Pathways to Art Appreciation: A Source Book for Media & Methods. Al Hurwitz, Stanley Madeja, and Eldon Katter. Reston, Virginia: National Art Education Association, 2003. Illus., softcover, 125 pp., $20.00.

The beautiful thing about this book is that it gives new meaning and respect to an outdated term--art appreciation. It's packed with well-tested ideas for teaching a balanced and comprehensive art curriculum and integrating components of criticism, aesthetics, art history, and studio production. The book is well designed and consistently organized with strands, including "things to do," "assessments," and, for those using the book as a text for pre-service courses, an "artful assignment." It's a great sourcebook for art teachers at all levels and is highly recommended as a preservice text for art education, as well as elementary education majors.
