Pathology Medical Laboratories Selects Per-Se Technologies for Total Practice Management.

Business Editors

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 2004

Per-Se Technologies (Nasdaq: PSTI), the leader in Connective Healthcare solutions that help physicians and hospitals to be financially successful, today announced a business agreement to deliver outsourced practice management services to Pathology Medical Laboratories, P.A. (PML) of Leesburg, Fla.

Under the agreement, Per-Se's Physician Services division will provide a wide range of Connective Healthcare services to streamline PML's reimbursement process and enhance its revenue cycle. These services include the management of outstanding accounts receivable and a dedicated, on-site account manager to manage PML's entire practice. Per-Se will also use its expertise in pathology reimbursement to assist PML with anatomic and clinical pathology billing, credentialing, HIPAA compliance and managed care contract negotiation. Per-Se will initiate billing for the professional component of clinical pathology to help ensure that PML's physicians are compensated for their laboratory expertise. Professional component of clinical pathology is a service for which PML had not previously recognized revenue.

"I chose Per-Se because of its reputation and experience in clinical pathology billing," said Susan Rendon, MD, president of PML. "We have a big practice and work very hard to provide our patients with quality lab services. Billing, credentialing and contracting are not our areas of expertise. The paperwork involved is a tremendous hassle, and we've had difficulties with collections. We know that Per-Se has been instrumental in helping other pathology groups increase their revenue, especially through the practice of professional component billing. We are confident that Per-Se will help us get proper compensation for the services we provide in the lab."

The professional component of clinical pathology includes such services as selecting test methods; assuring that tests and procedures are properly performed, recorded and reported; overseeing quality control methods; recommending follow-up diagnostic tests; and supervising laboratory technical personnel. Professional component billing involves charging the patient or the patient's insurer for each clinical procedure performed in the laboratory on the patient's behalf.

"Clinical pathology billing is a complicated area requiring specialized knowledge and careful handling of coding, credentialing and compliance details to ensure proper reimbursement," said Frank Murphy, president of Per-Se's Physician Services division. "Per-Se has more than two decades of experience in all areas of clinical and anatomic pathology billing backed by robust technology capabilities. We are uniquely positioned to help pathology groups like PML achieve the highest possible revenue."
