Pathlore Software today announced it is supporting the AICC (Aviation Industry CBT (Computer-Based Training) Using the computer for training and instruction. CBT programs are called "courseware" and provide interactive training sessions for all disciplines.  Committee) standard as a way for computer-based learning software to interoperate See interoperable.  over the Web with software that tracks student learning progress.

This Computer Managed Instruction (CMI (Computer-Managed Instruction) Using computers to organize and manage an instructional program for students. It helps create test materials, tracks the results and monitors student progress. ) software enables organizations to calculate their return on investment in training, and Pathlore has offered it longer than any existing vendor.  the latest AICC standard.

The standard allows companies to use off-the-shelf or privately authored courseware that a adheres to the standard with the CMI engines of Pathlore's PHOENIX and other products that adopt the standard. Pathlore's new products will support the existing Version 1.8 and the new Version 2.0 of the AICC standard (which is currently in review by the AICC), allowing companies to preserve their investments in training and to manage older AICC-compliant courseware over the Internet without having to rewrite it.

Bruce Duff, Pathlore's vice president of marketing, said his company is pleased to see the industry rally around the standard, which solidifies technology for many of the major features PHOENIX customers have come to expect.

"The PHOENIX Family of products has supported integrated Computer Managed Instruction since 1978," Duff said. "The AICC has brought broad-based recognition to the importance of measuring training results. The combination of PHOENIX Internet and AICC-compliant courseware enables effective curriculum management and student record-keeping across a wide variety of enterprise networks including client/server, intranets and the Internet," he said.

"By implementing the AICC standard, courseware developers can ensure that their courses are effective," he said. "In addition, organizations can verify that their training investment is paying off."

Chief Technology Officer, Leonard Greenberg, who participates on the AICC CMI Committee, said that Pathlore is excited that the AICC is successfully promoting the standard to a wider audience. "Our customers outside of the Aviation community are recognizing that the fine work of the AICC is applicable to their industry as well," said Greenberg.

CMI software organizes and manages an instructional program by helping create pre-test and post-test materials, tracking results, and monitoring student progress. CMI features track log-ins, attempts, scores, time spent, and the learner's ability to master the courseware. Features also randomize ran·dom·ize

About the AICC

Since 1993, the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) has developed and improved upon the AICC specification which was originally developed to provide interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  and choice for technology-based training in the aviation industry, an early adopter of CBT technology. The AICC standard is detailed in the document CMI001 found on the AICC Web site (www.AICC.org). It specifies a common method for CBT courses to relay results back to CMI management systems in both a traditional LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  environment and now the Internet as well. This common method enables organizations complete interoperability to mix-and-match best of breed courseware. In addition, the AICC specifies a common exchange format between CMI systems for their curriculum files, the information and access rules for the underlying course content. This exchange format allows organizations choice in buying CMI management systems since they can "plug and play" a new system. Representation on the AICC includes major airframe manufacturers and their suppliers; leading aviation-industry CBT vendors; airlines; standards making and regulatory agencies regulatory agency
