Governor George Pataki George Elmer Pataki (born June 24, 1945) is an American politician who was the 57th Governor of New York serving from January 1995 until January 1, 2007. He is a member of the Republican Party and was seen as a possible 2000 and 2008 Presidential candidate.  announced before he left office that the state had purchased 51,000 acres of land in St. Lawrence County Lawrence County is the name of eleven counties in the United States:
  • Lawrence County, Alabama
  • Lawrence County, Arkansas
  • Lawrence County, Illinois
  • Lawrence County, Indiana
  • Lawrence County, Kentucky
  • Lawrence County, Mississippi
for hiking, fishing, boating and camping opportunities.

The $6.5 million purchase put the governor over his goal of securing one million acres of land for preservation. The total amount of land secured by Pataki now stands at 1,020,000 acres. The forestry company Rayonier sold this last parcel of land, with the deal requiring the company to practice sustainable forestry Sustainable forestry is a forest management practice. The basic tenet of sustainable forestry is that the amount of goods and services yielded from a forest should be at a level the forest is capable of producing without degradation of the soil, watershed features or seed source .

Pataki's overall plan allowed $1.75 billion through an environmental bond act in 1996.

While about half of the total acreage preserved has been acquired, the remaining preserved land is tied up with title searches or with non-profit organizations, which will turn them over to the state.
