Past to present: for teachers.

Sequencing art images by means of a timeline is a practical, easy, and enjoyable method to encourage students to think about meaningful connections between works of art and the cultures that produced them. The Internet is an excellent resource to access for the use and development of timelines. Timeline formats and complexities are often adaptable for use with many grade levels of students.

The online timeline par excellence is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Timeline of Art History. It outstandingly presents the history of art from around the world illustrated by the museum's collection. Currently it spans from prehistory prehistory, period of human evolution before writing was invented and records kept. The term was coined by Daniel Wilson in 1851. It is followed by protohistory, the period for which we have some records but must still rely largely on archaeological evidence to  to 1600 AD but it will eventually extend up to the present time.
