WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Catholic University of America Catholic University of America, at Washington, D.C.; the national university of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States; coeducational; founded 1887 and opened 1889.  has got friends in high places when it comes to U.S. politics. Both the head of the Democratic National Committee, Terry McAuliffe Terence Richard "Terry" McAuliffe (b. 1957) is an American business and political leader. He served as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2001-05. He currently serves as Chairman of the Hillary Clinton for President exploratory campaign committee. , and of the Republican National Committee, Ed Gillespie, are CUA alumni.

The two faced off in a debate on campus in March. Although they were told to "fight nice" by the university's president, United Press International reports that "knives were drawn and policy was naught to be found." The main point of contention between the chairmen was who had thrown the first punch in the brutally negative campaign for president. "Right out of the box, you're running attack ads, and now we're going to have to respond," McAuliffe told Gillespie.
