In addition to these and other programs, the following first-ever programs and successes are worth noting. Advancing Research and Youth Programs The National Football League awarded NRPA a grant for nearly $2.5 million over a three-year period. This grant is the largest in NRPA's history and enables the association to conduct much-needed research, as well as position itself as a source for primary information on the field. The scope of the grant includes: * Completing a national inventory of youth football facilities and independent program contacts to strategically grow the sport * Awarding five communities $150,000 for staffing to build models for youth football * Developing an advocacy agenda to train citizens to support funding for facilities that include youth football Making Communities Safer Operation [TLC TLC total lung capacity; thin-layer chromatography. Through these generous donations NRPA was able to provide seven communities with $10,000 grants to get facilities up and running for spring 2006. Additionally, a partnership with S&S Worldwide provided $32,000 worth of equipment and supplies to affected areas for fall programming. Also as a result of the devastation of these hurricanes, NRPA is working on a first-ever sustainable relief strategy to assist park and recreation agencies affected by disasters in the future. By October 2009, the new board will be composed of 11 citizens and 10 professionals--retaining the board's existing 51 percent citizen and 49 percent professional composition. New board members will be elected at-large, rather than as representatives of special interest units of the association. NRPA's Board of Trustees also voted this year to establish a new foundation. The National Recreation and Park Foundation will secure the association's financial future and make available funds to advance the field of parks and recreation in the decades ahead. |
