The school district's partner in the program is the Petal Family YMCA YMCA in full Young Men's Christian Association Nonsectarian, nonpolitical Christian lay movement that aims to develop high standards of Christian character among its members. . The district started the program with financing from a 21st Century Learning Center grant from the Mississippi Mississippi, state, United States Mississippi (mĭs'əsĭp`ē), one of the Deep South states of the United States. It is bordered by Alabama (E), the Gulf of Mexico (S), Arkansas and Louisiana, with most of the border formed by Department of Education. Certified teachers A certified teacher is a teacher who has earned credentials from an authoritative source, such as the government, a higher education institution or a private source. These certifications allow teachers to teach in schools which require authorization in general, as well as allowing employed by the school district provide academic tutoring and/or remediation for students who qualify for the program. YMCA counselors supervise programs that build healthy spirits, minds and bodies with recreation and character development as the key components. The YMCA provides a site coordinator/counselor who supervises at least three counselors at each location. The counselors have been trained for the Project T.E.A.M. program and are monitored daily by Family Y and Project T.E.A.M. directors. An ongoing collaboration between the Project T.E.A.M. director and the director of school-age programs for the Y ensures close coordination between the program's partners. Members of each organization meet weekly to discuss the roles and responsibilities of each. All program staff members meet to discuss problems and concerns and the results of surveys completed by parents and students to help ensure satisfaction. The program's first-year accomplishments include: * Forty high school students and 41 middle school students earned credits for classes during the summer sessions in 2003 and 2004. * Seventy-eight percent of the regular attendees showed academic improvement in math. * Seventy-three percent of regular attendees demonstrated better reading and language skills. * Eighty-seven percent showed progress in getting along well with other students. * Seventy-eight percent exhibited better classroom behavior. * More than 84 percent of parents of participants believed the services and activities offered were worthwhile.
