 Alliance for the third annual Lights On Afterschool! Two years ago, the alliance, with support from JCPenney After-school, initiated Lights On Afterschool! to recognize the critical importance of high-quality afterschool programs in the lives of children, their families and their communities. On that day, 1,200 afterschool programs opened their doors to their neighbors, community leaders and media. One year later, the number of events tripled.

This year's event, held on Oct. 10, was even stronger, with 5,000 sites across the country rallying to demonstrate how afterschool programs improve student performance, support working families and keep communities safe.

The Afterschool Alliance is committed to ensuring that all children have access to high-quality affordable afterschool programs by 2010. A study supported by the Wallace-Reader's Digest Digest: see Corpus Juris Civilis.

 Fund found that nearly 80 percent of parents surveyed said that afterschool programs helped their children to cope with behavioral problems and helped them obtain new skills to meet increased demands in school.

Nine out of 10 Americans think that all children should have access to afterschool programs, but most don't believe there are enough programs. High-quality afterschool programs affect entire communities. Children today need safe, stimulating activities after school, yet as many as 15 million children have no place to go after school.
