Partnership for Environmental Technology Education. The Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) is a non-profit organization established to facilitate, augment and broker academic, industrial and governmental partnerships to: * meet the education and environmental training needs of the nation, * promote environmental technology transfer, * foster the participation of underrepresented minorities and women in environmental fields, and * enhance U.S. economic development and international competitiveness. The PETE network consists of six regional public-private partnerships serving all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories. Its partners include over 400 community and technical colleges - which represent almost one-third of the two-year institutions in the United States, and multiple business, industry and governmental agencies. Mission To provide leadership in environmental education and training through community and technical college partnerships with business, industry, government and other educational providers. National Goals 1. Create and maintain regional public-private partnerships to support a national network of community and technical colleges delivering quality environmental education and training. 2. Support the development and implementation of quality environmental programs at community and technical colleges. 3. Promote the articulation of quality programs to create an environmental education ladder from high school through the post graduate level. 4. Assist colleges in meeting the environmental workforce education, training and retraining needs of the nation. 5. Support economic development and international competitiveness through facilitating the use of environmentally sound practices and technology. 6. Contribute to the improvement of global environmental stewardship through international programs and partnerships in environmental education and training. 7. Establish and maintain organizational sustainability and financial self-sufficiency. 8. Promote environmental literacy for everyone. Approach Each regional PETE network is intended to organize and function as a semi-independent partnership focused not only on realizing the national goals but also on: * developing regional resources, * addressing uniquely regional problems, * meeting workforce training needs, and * ensuring that community/technical college graduates meet the job market demands of the region, and are prepared to enter specialized fields of study in four year institutions. This regional concentration, combined with PETE's emphasis on collaborative partnerships, has produced significant results. Colleges, local employers, business, industry, federal laboratories, government agencies and professional organizations have joined together to develop strong, responsive community environmental education and training networks across the nation. Funding PETE is primarily sponsored by several federal agencies: Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and (EPA), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Presently corporate and foundation sponsors are being sought to ensure PETE's continued role in facilitating effective environmental education and workforce development partnerships and programs.
