Park and Recreation amenities abound in Money's "Best Places".


Money magazine named its "2006 Best Places to Live: Great American Towns" in its August issue. The locations may be geographically all over the map, but most of these places share excellent park systems and recreation opportunities.

Fort Collins, Colo., was ranked the top place in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  to live. Among its top named attributes was a "fantastic outdoor life," which includes the Horsetooth Reservoir Horsetooth Reservoir (often known locally as Horsetooth) is a large reservoir in southern Larimer County, Colorado just west of the city of Fort Collins, Colorado. The reservoir sits in the foothills above the town on the western side of the Dakota Hogback, which contains  for boating and swimming, and 60 miles of hiking and biking trails.

Columbia, Md., ranked fourth overall, was touted for its park space, totaling more than a third of the town's 14,000 acres. In addition, Cary, N.C., earned its No. 5 standing with more than 30 parks and greenways.

Eight of the top 50 places in the list were home to NRPA-member park and recreation departments. They include Howard County Howard County is the name of seven counties in the United States of America:
  • Howard County, Arkansas: named for James H. Howard, an Arkansas state senator.
  • Howard County, Indiana: named for Tilghman Ashurst Howard, an U.S. Representative from Indiana.
 (Columbia/Ellicott City), Md. (No. 4), Cary, N.C. (No. 5), Scottsdale, Ariz. (No. 7), Plano, Texas Plano (IPA: /ˈpleɪnoʊ/) is a wealthy suburb of Dallas, Texas, located to the north, mainly within Collin County, but also extending into Denton County. According to the 2000 U.S.  (No. 11), Henderson, Nev. (No. 20), Bellevue, Wash. (No. 21), Montgomery County (Rockville), Md. (No. 26) and Lee's Summit, Mo. (No. 44).

Money also published a short ranking of the top 10 cities with a population of more than 300,000 people. Raleigh, N.C., ranked fourth, and has so much greenspace that it's described as a park with a city in it, according to the magazine. NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association

 member Virginia Beach, Va., snagged the sixth spot with its 38 miles of waterfront.
