Park administrator and teacher dies.


Arthur Wilcox of Fort Collins, Colo., whose career was dedicated to park administration and teaching, died Nov. 23, 2005.

Educational grant under an international exchange program created to increase understanding between the U.S. and other countries. The program was conceived by U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright and instituted by the Fulbright Act of 1946.

He was the editor of the Parks Maintenance Publications of the American Institute of Park Executives and an officer in the National Society of Park Resources and the Rocky Mountain Nature Association. Wilcox spent a considerable amount of his career as an administrator with the Akron, Ohio, Metropolitan Park District.

Not only was Wilcox an apt administrator but an active educator. He taught at Michigan State University Michigan State University, at East Lansing; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1855. It opened in 1857 as Michigan Agricultural College, the first state agricultural college.  and Colorado State University Colorado State University, at Fort Collins; land-grant with state and federal support; chartered 1870, opened 1879 as an agricultural college, assumed present name in 1957. There is a veterinary teaching hospital, an agricultural campus, and a research campus. , where he helped found the CSU See DSU/CSU.

Wilcox also was integral in the founding of the Fort Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau, Colorado's State Welcome Center and the Rotary Farm Heritage Museum at Lee Martinez Park in Fort Collins.

During his life, Wilcox received a number of awards, including the Rotary Club Service-Above-Self Award and a lifetime achievement award from CSU's Department of Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism in recognition of his extraordinary academic contribution to Recreation and Natural Resource Management. In 2004, he was named the Governor's Outstanding Tourism Volunteer in Colorado.
