Mung-Mung is a beautiful first book of animals, which are identified by their calls as onomatopoetically indicated in multiple languages. The layout of the book allows the reader to play with the animal sounds before opening the foldout to reveal which animal is speaking. Hence, children can learn about different animals while also learning about different cultures and languages. The sounds are brightly and playfully scripted in words that wind and somersault on the page. Close to each transliterated sound is the language in which it is used: Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Filipino, Hindi, Russian, French, Arabic, Polish, Italian, Turkish, Swedish, Japanese, Norwegian, Vietnamese, German ... and English. The book concludes with a brief explanation of how animal sounds are represented in different cultures, and invites the reader to research other animal noises.
