Parent to parent national survey.

Parent to Parent National Survey

Parent to Parent programs involves matching an experienced or "veteran" parent of a family member with a disability with a new or "referred" parent who is just beginning to meet the challenges of a child with a disability within the family. New parents can be helped in a unique way by "veteran" parents who have already weathered similar life experiences. Because the "veteran" parents has "been there," (s)he is in a unique position to establish a meaningful bond with the referred parent and to provide emotional support and information. Because "veteran" parents are intimately familiar with the wide range of emotions new parents are likely to experience and the real day-to-day challenges that can offer something that other support systems cannot--shared common experiences. These shared experiences often become the foundation for relationships that develop into lifelong friendships.

The Parent to Parent National Survey Project at the Beach Center on Families and Disability at The University of Kansas is surveying Parent to Parent programs nationwide in order to learn about the ways these programs are meeting the relationship needs of families in which there is a child with a disability. The Beach Center has learned that:

Although some programs provide support to families with only one common disability, most deal with many disabilities. Most participating families have a young child with a disability, although programs to serve families with an older family member do exist.

The support provided by the Parent to Parent program can include:

* someone to listen and understand -- emotional support;

* information about the child's disability;

* referrals to community-service providers;

* problem-solving;

* group activities;

* social events;

* advocacy training;

* activities for other family members.

"Veteran" parents may also receive formal training in effective strategies for serving as a resource parent, consultation and support from the staff.

In most programs the match is established and the initial contact between the "veteran" parent and the referred parent is made within a week of the new parent's referral to the program. Appropriate matches between "veteran" and referred parents are typically established based upon: similarity in the disability; the types of specific issues facing the family; the age of the family member with a disability; and the primary language spoken at home. Other factors include: similar family structures; similar cultural/ethnic backgrounds; age of the parent(s); geographic proximity and similar socio-economic status.

Information being generated from the surveys is already being used to help parents who are looking for Parent to Parent programs in their communities; to answer questions from parents and professionals about starting and expanding a Parent to Parent program; and to link Parent to Parent programs together in a network for sharing resources, materials, best practices and ideas for the future of Parent to Parent.

The second phase of the project is just getting underway. In this phase, approximately 5,000 parents and "veteran" parents have been invited to share their experiences. The information gathered from parents will be used to provide the family perspective on Parent to Parent participation.

Information from Parent to Parent program administrators and from parents participating in Parent to Parent programs nationwide will be used to develop additional resources for families and professionals. Families and professionals who are interested in learning more about the work of the Parent to Parent National Survey Project are encouraged to contact Ann Turnbull, the project director, or Betsy Santelli, the project coordinator, at: Beach Center on Families and Disabilities The University of Kansas Bureau of Child Research 4138 Haworth Hall, Lawrence, Kan. 66045.

NOTE: The Resource Section that follows lists Parent to Parent program in alphabetical order by state. Within each state, organizations are listed alphabetically by city or town. This resource section will be run over the next three issues to cover all Parent to Parent programs in the United States.
