) today announced that Pro/ENGINEER 2000i and other PTC (PTC, Needham, MA, www.ptc.com) Long a world leader in mechanical computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering software, PTC, through acquisitions and reorganization, has transformed itself into a leading provider of Internet-based B2B solutions for discrete manufacturers.  i-Series solutions have been selected to help design Quicksilver, a jet-propelled hydroplane hydroplane, small, high-powered racing boat designed to skim along the surface of the water. Its hull is so shaped that at high speeds the bow is tilted up out of the water, reducing the effect of frictional drag. Hydroplanes are commonly powered by outboard motors.  that will compete to achieve the world water speed record. Quicksilver's chief designer, Ken Norris, is the only man in history to have designed both the world's fastest car and boat.

The world water speed record currently stands at 317.60 mph (511.11 kph). To achieve such astronomical speeds, the boat must be engineered to overcome water resistance. Because the boat design is of utmost importance, the Quicksilver team has installed Pro/ENGINEER 2000i with Behavioral Modeling to drive innovation. The build program for Quicksilver relies heavily on mechanical design automation, and Pro/ENGINEER with the PTC i-Series creates a seamless engineering environment that spans the development process.

"We are very excited about our partnership with Parametric Technology," said Quicksilver driver and Manager, Nigel Macknight. "Our efforts on the Quicksilver World Water Speed Record Challenge have gained particular attention because of our links with the famous Bluebird bluebird, common name for a North American migratory bird of the family Turdidae (thrush family). The eastern bluebird, Sialia sialis, is among the first spring arrivals in the North. It is about 7 in. (17.8 cm) long.  project of the 1950s and 60s. We want to put the wisdom and experience gained in that record-breaking endeavor into a thoroughly modern context, and for that we need proactive technical partners with the best technology. PTC, Pro/ENGINEER and Behavioral Modeling are the perfect match for us."

At the planned speeds, the strength of the design is key. For finite element analysis Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer simulation technique used in engineering analysis. It uses a numerical technique called the finite element method (FEM). There are many finite element software packages, both free and proprietary.  (FEA (Finite Element Analysis) A mathematical technique for analyzing stress, which breaks down a physical structure into substructures called "finite elements." The finite elements and their interrelationships are converted into equation form and solved mathematically. ), one of several key design tasks, the Quicksilver team will use Pro/MECHANICA with Pro/ENGINEER Behavioral Modeling. These tools will help to perfect the design of large, honeycomb honeycomb

sandwich panels that will bear the brunt of the loads hitting the Quicksilver craft as it races across the surface of Coniston Water, located in the Lake District of England.

Once structural design issues are resolved, the design team's focus will switch to the on-board systems. The team expects to streamline the definition of the craft's internal layout with the help of Pro/ENGINEER by virtually assessing alternative configurations for the hydraulic, electric, telemetry, cooling and fuel systems.

"As an innovator in mechanical design automation software, we are extremely proud to be partnering with Ken Norris, one of today's most innovative designers," said John Stuart, vice president, worldwide field marketing for Parametric Technology. "We look forward to the result of this powerful combination and helping Quicksilver achieve the world water speed record."

About Pro/ENGINEER and the PTC i-Series

The PTC i-Series is a continuum of interoperable mechanical design automation solutions employed by PTC's more than 225,000 users worldwide for the design, engineering, manufacturing and support of products. All information is shared between these solutions using PTC's unique Associative Topology Bus, ensuring that changes are propagated and shared with all product development participants. The Pro/ENGINEER design system -- the heart of the PTC i-Series -- features PTC's new Behavioral Modeling technology which allows designers to innovate their products more rapidly and effectively.
