Paradyne Announces Immediate Availability of Voice Over DSL - VoDSL - Services With Its Hotwire Multiservices Platform.

RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--

Choice One Communications Choice One Communications is a Rochester, New York-based CLEC providing Telecommunications services to commercial entities. The company was founded in 1998 as an "alternative to the incumbent local phone carriers".  to Deploy Market Trials for Voice and

High-Speed Data Services

Paradyne Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: PDYN), a pioneer and leader in broadband network access and Service Level Management (SLM See service level management system and spatial light modulator. ), announced today at DSLcon Fall '99 in Reston, Va. the availability and support for Voice over DSL DSL
 in full Digital Subscriber Line

Broadband digital communications connection that operates over standard copper telephone wires. It requires a DSL modem, which splits transmissions into two frequency bands: the lower frequencies for voice (ordinary
(VoDSL) within the Hotwire(R) multiservices DSL suite.

The new VoDSL capabilities enable delivery of voice plus high-speed data services, and result from the collaborative partnerships between Paradyne, Jetstream, TollBridge Technologies and CopperCom announced earlier this year.

Paradyne's first customer to leverage the VoDSL opportunity, Choice One Communications Inc., a leading ICP (1) (Internet Cache Protocol) A protocol used by one proxy server to query another for a cached Web page without having to go to the Internet to retrieve it. See CARP and proxy server.  in the northeast, will move from lab trials to market trials to deploy voice and data services utilizing Hotwire DSL to business customers in select cities across New York New York, state, United States

state. The initial Choice One market trials that will take place in Albany, N.Y., incorporate equipment from Paradyne, TollBridge, Jetstream and CopperCom.

Paradyne's Hotwire multiservices solution in concert with Jetstream's leading VoDSL voice gateway and integrated access devices (IAD (Integrated Access Device) A device that multiplexes a variety of communications technologies in the customer's premises onto a single telephone line for transmission to the carrier. It also demultiplexes the incoming streams into their respective channels. ), CopperCom's CopperComplete DSL solution and TollBridge's TB200 Local Exchange Gateway enable Choice One to deliver multiple telephone lines and high-speed data services over a single unbundled copper loop at significant cost savings over traditional infrastructure alternatives.

"The Paradyne solution in conjunction with key VoDSL partners offers cutting-edge technology that will enable us to penetrate new markets quickly," said Kevin Dickens, senior vice president for Choice One. "Our decision to partner with Paradyne for DSL-based services was predicated, in part, on their performance in our lab trial as well as their demonstrated commitment and ability to support integrated voice and data solutions."

The combination of Paradyne's Hotwire DSL solution with the voice content from their partners into Choice One's ATM backbone, delivers a low latency Low latency allows human-unnoticeable delays between an input being processed and the corresponding output providing real time characteristics. This can be especially important for internet connections utilizing services such as online gaming and VOIP - VOIP is not as important as  end-to-end ATM solution supporting voice and data while assuring Quality of Service (QoS). This will allow service providers to gain significant network efficiencies while maintaining all the feature rich voice and data services required by their business clients.

"Our Hotwire multiservices DSL solution provides Network Service Providers a robust set of voice and data products to leverage across a wide range of services immediately," said Frank Wiener, vice president, Broadband Access See broadband and wireless broadband.  Solutions at Paradyne. "Our highly flexible Hotwire system empowers key customers, like Choice One, to act on emerging services like VoDSL today as well as providing them with one of the broadest service coverage solutions in the industry."

Choice One has initial deployment plans for four cities with continued deployment of the network immediately upon successful completion of the market trials. The company will deliver services in New York initially, with plans to extend the network to five additional northeastern states including Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island Rhode Island, island, United States

VoDSL

The Paradyne/TollBridge solution will combine the Hotwire multiservices DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  with the TollBridge TB200 Local Exchange Gateway and TB50 IAD and will provide a suite of packet and ATM-based voice and high-speed data services. The Paradyne/Jetstream VoDSL solution combines the Hotwire multiservices DSLAM with Jetstream's CPX-1000 Voice Gateway and IADs to provide a suite of ATM-based voice and high-speed data services. Paradyne is also working with the CopperCom Gateway in support of VoDSL services using the Hotwire multiservices platform. The emerging VoDSL application offers significant benefits while reducing subscriber costs while dramatically improving revenue potential from multi-line voice and high speed data offerings.
