Dave Butler, editor of the Daily News of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , heads off to become editor and publisher of The Detroit News. The switch comes as MediaNews Group Not to be confused with Media General, an unrelated newspaper and TV group.
MediaNews Group, based in Denver, Colorado, is one of the largest newspaper companies in the United States.
 Inc., the Denver-based publisher of the Daily News and the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories. , purchases the Detroit News from the nation's largest newspaper company, Gannett Corp. Butler came to the Daily News as editor in 1997, the same year MediaNews began cobbling together a chain of suburban newspapers around Los Angeles with the Daily News as its flagship. MediaNews Group announced that it was buying the Detroit News and Gannett said it would purchase the rival Detroit Free Press The Detroit Free Press is the largest daily newspaper in Detroit, Michigan, USA. It is sometimes informally referred to as the "Freep". Some still refer to it locally as "The Friendly" -- a slogan from an ad campaign in the '70s.  from Knight Ridder Inc., the nation's second-largest newspaper publisher.
