Papal meeting gives Kung hope.

Dissident Roman Catholic theologian Hans Kung says he is hoping for new openness from the Vatican after he met with Pope Benedict XVI Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled due to vandalism.  on Sept. 24 at the pontiff's summer residence near Rome.

Mr. Kung's licence to teach Roman Catholic theology was revoked by the Vatican in 1979 after he cast a critical eye on concepts such as papal infallibility and the virgin birth. Efforts by Mr. Kung to meet Pope Benedict's predecessor, Pope John Paul II Pope John Paul II (Latin: Ioannes Paulus PP. II, Italian: Giovanni Paolo II, Polish: Jan Paweł II) born Karol Józef Wojtyła  , came to nothing. Mr. Kung, who is now noted as a pioneer of dialogue with non-Christian faiths through his Global Ethic Foundation, and Pope Benedict met in a "friendly atmosphere," Vatican spokesperson Joaquin Navarro Valls Doctor Joaquín Navarro Valls, M.D., (born November 16, 1936, Cartagena, Spain) was the Director of the Holy See (Vatican) Press Office, taking the post in 1984. His role as the press liaison between the Vatican and the world press corps gave him perhaps the highest visibility of  said.
