Panic in classroom.

A HEAD teacher has backed a member of staff who panicked more than 200 pupils by telling them an asteroid was going to hit Earth.

The Manchester teacher told terrified 14-year-olds that a meteorite was on a collision course with the Earth and they were going to die - later saying it was meant to be a lesson in how youngsters should "live each day to the full".

But many of the 230 pupils at St Matthew's RC High School in Moston became frightened and upset. Head Keith Hogan apologised but said he believed the teacher had acted "professionally".
