"In terms of getting the public's attention, having a panda to advertise is about as good as it gets for a zoo, and they're smart to exploit that," said Bill Eadie Bill Eadie (born December 27, 1947) is a professional wrestler who has competed under the names of Ax as part of Demolition and The Masked Superstar. The zoo's marketing stall keeps mum on attendance figures, allowing only that they have been flat for several years, and zoo spokeswoman Christina Simmons wouldn't speculate on the potential for an increase.

The post-9/11 fallout on international tourism has resulted in attractions depending more on local residents and visitors from nearby cities, said Tammi Haughey, general manager of Di Zinno Thompson, the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau's advertising agency.

That pits the zoo and the Wild Animal Park Wild Animal Park may refer to:

against other attractions in San Diego. It also means local attractions face stiffer competition from other attractions in Southern California.

Haughey said plans for co-op marketing would target nearby drive markets like Nevada and Arizona. "Obviously, having panda twins gives us a whole new message to advertise," she said. "We go after these markets year after year, so we have to give people a new reason to come here."

Carl Winston, director of San Diego Stare University's hospitality and tourism management program, said area attractions must come up with new ideas to continue to draw people.

"Attractions like SeaWorld and Legoland have to continually reinvent themselves or add new rides," Winston said. "While the zoo can't add a ride at this point, or a new attraction, it's done a great job of taking advantage of these events with the panda pregnancies."

If both cubs survive, the zoo will have five giant pandas, more than any other zoo outside of China.

Bai Yun and Shi Shi arrived at the zoo in 1996. Under a 12-year loan agreement with China, the zoo is required to pay about $1 million a year for the adult pandas. The money goes to help China maintain its land reserves for its estimated 1,000 wild giant pandas.
