, PC EXPO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 18, 1996--Panasonic Personal Computer Co. announced today that its new CF-62 multimedia notebook computer, the world's first notebook to have an integrated PD drive, will support MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  (Motion Picture Experts Group (spelling) Motion Picture Experts Group - Incorrect expansion of MPEG, which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group. ) PC Cards incorporating the chipset manufactured by Sigma Designs Inc. of Fremont, Calif.

These new PC cards will greatly enchance the video and audio quality of multimedia applications for CF-62 mobile users.

PC Cards with Sigma Designs' REALmagic Explorer(TM) chipset enables users to take advantage of the CF-62's ZV (Zoomed Video) MPEG Port. Zoomed Video technology allows an integrated, cost-effective means of delivering full screen, full motion (30 frames per second) video and CD quality sound. CF-62 users will now be able to run MPEG applications including MPEG OM1 and REALmagic compatible programs for multimedia presentations.

The ZV Port standard allows notebook computer users to take advantage of the superior performance features of MPEG. The REALmagic Explorer chipset meets MPEG-1 specifications in addition to Windows '95(R) compatibility and complies with MPC (1) (Mobile PC) A handheld or laptop computer. "The CF-62 is the first multimedia computer to have an integrated PD drive that allows users to read from and write to removable 650MB rewritable optical discs. It also can play CD-ROMs. Utilizing an MPEG PC Card in tandem with the CF-62's 12.1" active matrix display (hardware) active matrix display - A type of liquid crystal display where each display element (each pixel) includes an active component such as a transistor to maintain its state between scans.
