that can detect the presence of disease markers in the blood sample. The compact multi-task biosensor (MBS See Mb/sec.

) can, from just one drop of blood, measure levels of certain proteins and other small molecules that act as disease markers for diseases like liver disorders and infections. The multi-task sensor is compact and can measure the levels of multiple number of proteins and other small molecules quickly.

MBS uses an enzyme-enhancement and electrochemical electrochemical /elec·tro·chem·i·cal/ (-kem´i-k'l) pertaining to interaction or interconversion of chemical and electrical energies.

method, to detect the concentration of disease markers in the blood sample, which changes according to the level and nature of illness. Panasonic has successfully incorporated its cutting-edge nanotechnology to provide high-sensitivity measurement of various disease markers in around 20 minutes from one drop of blood sample. Results are obtained by applying the blood sample to a sensor chip with micro channels that detect the presence of the disease markers.

This quick and simple check for detecting signs of infections and "lifestyle diseases" in their early stages provides great support to doctors making decisions about therapeutic and preventive medical care.

Conventional methods for disease detection require more than five milliliters of blood which is clinically examined using large, specifically designed equipment. The analysis is often outsourced to medical laboratories, requiring a day, or in cases, up to a week to receive results. Although chip electrophoresis is an example of a technique that can be applied to point-of-care-testing (POCT POCT Point of care testing, see there ), the sensitivity is considered insufficient to measure the minute amount of disease markers.

The MBS is approximately the size of an oven toaster - small enough to be set on a table. This is achieved by using a small sensor chip (6cm x 6cm - roughly equal to the size of a business card) and the breakthrough in fine processing technology.

The reduced measurement time and equipment size is possible by using a combination of Panasonic's proprietary technologies. Nano-level fine processing technology was applied to miniaturize min·i·a·tur·ize

the sensor chip, to decrease the volume of blood sample and to achieve smooth flow of the blood sample. In addition, high-precision microfluidics were required to control the flow of blood in the micro channel to test various chemical reactions in a designated order. Hypersensitivity hypersensitivity, heightened response in a body tissue to an antigen or foreign substance. The body normally responds to an antigen by producing specific antibodies against it. The antibodies impart immunity for any later exposure to that antigen.  electrochemical biosensor technology achieved measurement sensitivity of disease markers with an efficiency of more than 1,000 times that of conventional chip electrophoresis. That is achieved by combining multiple enzyme-enhancement reaction of the markers contained in the blood sample.

To date, 11 patent applications have been filed in Japan, and three outside of Japan. The development was conducted as a part of the "Advanced Nanobiodevice Project (Development of POCT multi-biosensor)", funded by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan (NEDO NEDO National Eating Disorders Organization
NEDO New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (Japan)
NEDO National Economic Development Office
) for FY2003-2005. It will be displayed in the "International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference (nano tech 2006)", held in Tokyo from February 21-23. Panasonic will introduce the MBS around 2010.
