On hand to celebrate were several PanAmSat customers, executives and employees as well as local dignitaries.

"With the opening of PanAmSat's teleport, Napa is now the telecommunications gateway to the Pacific as well as the home of some of the world's finest World's Finest may refer to:

The Napa facility is a vital part of our worldwide communications capabilities."

A teleport contains satellite transmission antennas, monitoring equipment, other communications components and engineering support staff to transmit, receive and monitor broadcast and telecommunications signals beamed off satellites. The Napa teleport transmits and receives signals over PanAmSat's PAS-2 Pacific Ocean Region satellite, which provides C-band and Ku-band coverage of the Asia-Pacific region from its orbital location of 191 degrees West Longitude. The teleport also has the capability to access and relay broadcast and telecommunications signals over U.S. domestic and Atlantic region satellites and ground-based fiber optic lines.

Staffing at the Napa facility currently consists of 21 local engineering and support personnel. In addition to technical services, the teleport hosts a range of ongoing events for customers from Asia, Europe and North America. Broadcasters who use the Napa teleport for transmission services over the PAS-2 satellite include the BBC BBC

The Napa facility is poised for significant service expansion. It will be PanAmSat's first teleport to provide direct access to PanAmSat satellites over both the Pacific Ocean Region and Atlantic Ocean Atlantic Ocean [Lat.,=of Atlas], second largest ocean (c.31,800,000 sq mi/82,362,000 sq km; c.36,000,000 sq mi/93,240,000 sq km with marginal seas). HNS pioneered the development of high-speed satellite Internet access services and IP-based networks with its original DirecPC service but which it now markets , Inc., is installing equipment at the Napa facility to connect Japan's Direct Internet Corporation to a major U.S. Internet backbone (communications, networking) Internet backbone - High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic.

These communications networks are provided by companies such as AT&T, GTE, IBM, MCI, Netcom, Sprint, UUNET and consist of high-speed links in the T1, T3, OC1 and OC3 ranges.

The Napa facility also is expected to provide transmission services over PanAmSat's second Pacific Ocean Region satellite, PAS-8, which is scheduled for launch in mid-1998.

In addition to the Napa facility, PanAmSat operates two other teleports: its global operations center in Ellenwood, Ga., and the Atlantic Ocean Region teleport in Homestead, Fla. These facilities currently provide transmission services over PanAmSat's PAS-1 and PAS-3 Atlantic Ocean Region satellites. The company also has teleport access agreements with operators in Australia, England, France, Hong Kong, Italy and Singapore.

PanAmSat is the world's first private-sector company to provide global satellite services. It offers satellite-based video and data communications services to hundreds of customers worldwide using a four-satellite global system: PAS-1; PAS-2; PAS-3; and PAS-4 over the Indian Ocean Region. PanAmSat plans to launch four additional satellites (including PAS-5 and PAS-8) by mid-1998, which will enable the company to operate multiple satellites in each ocean region worldwide. The next launch, deploying the PAS-6 satellite over the Atlantic Ocean Region, is scheduled for May 1997. In September 1996, PanAmSat and Hughes Electronics Corporation announced an agreement to merge their respective fixed satellite service operations into a new publicly held company.
