Palamida Announces Product Enhancements to Help Companies Leverage Sun's Decision to Open Source Java Technology.

Updated Products, Available Immediately, Help Java Language Developers Manage Software License Implications of Sun's Announcement

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  -- Palamida[TM], a provider of software intellectual property (IP) management and compliance products and services, today announced immediate availability of updates to the IP Amplifier, IP Authorizer and Compliance Library products. The announcement comes on the heels of Sun Microsystems' announcement that it will license all of its Java platform Running Java programs under the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java "platform" refers to the running of Java programs versus Java itself, which is a programming language. Java programs are machine independent and run intact on any hardware platform that has a Java interpreter (JVM).  implementations under the GNU General Public License A software license from the Free Software Foundation (FSF) that ensures every user receives the essential freedoms that define "free" software, which is free of restrictions (see free software).  as well as a Sun commercial license.

Sun's announcement underscores the growing importance of intellectual property interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  and the need for diligence under expanded licensing obligations. The update to Palamida's IP Amplifier and Compliance products will help customers identify the Java language files they are using from the Sun Java SE Development Kit (JDK (Java Development Kit) A Java software development environment from Sun. It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language. ) and their associated license requirements. The update to the IP Authorizer will enable customers to assess how developers are using components of the JDK.

"Open sourcing Java provides developers and companies with new chances to innovate on the Java platform in new environments," said RedMonk analyst Michael Cote. "IP compliance tools like Palamida's suite of products could help lay the innovation groundwork for companies that want to manage their compliance with Java's new dual-licensing terms."

"We applaud Sun's decision to open source Java," said Palamida CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Mark Tolliver. "It will be a catalyst for renewing innovation for the Java platform and underscores the need for IP diligence on behalf of developers going forward. With the new enhancements to our products, we help developers focus on doing what they do best - developing new and better applications - while we automate the software identification and license verification process."

The announcement consists of an update to the Compliance Library database of over 130,000 open source and commercial third-party products, bundled with the IP Amplifier, to reflect licensing changes in the JDK distribution for the Java programming language compiler (javac), the Java HotSpot technology and JavaHelp software. In addition, OpenJDK will be available in the Compliance Library beginning in 2007. Once IP Amplifier identifies various Java language files in use by developers, the updated IP Authorizer module assesses how developers will be using them, a question with further software license implications. IP Authorizer helps communicate, for example, whether the files are:

* Statically or dynamically linked

* Modified in any way

* Set to be part of external distribution

* For internal use only

* Used as a development tool

In addition, customers may need to be aware of the open source projects they are using that include Java language files. There are at least 100 common open source projects that are using the Java compiler A compiler for the Java language that converts source code into native machine code. Although this makes the program platform dependent since it only runs in one CPU family, it also runs the fastest when compiled into native machine language.  currently, one of the first components within the JDK to be affected by the license change.
