PaineWebber to sponsor ABC/Raycom college basketball.
Commencing in January, 1996, the ABC network package features 16 broadcast windows and 36 total games.
The multi-year agreement marks the first time that the firm has sponsored a network college basketball package. As title sponsor, the ABC / Raycom college basketball package will now be known as "PaineWebber College Basketball on ABC." As title sponsor, PaineWebber will receive a fully integrated marketing package with on-air identification and in-game features and billboards as well as a complete merchandising package.
The PaineWebber ABC schedule, expanded from 11 windows last season, showcases many of the nation's top teams, including six appearances by defending national champion UCLA and several key matchups from the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference, including the season-finale involving traditional rivals Duke versus North Carolina.
Since Raycom began televising the ABC college basketball package in 1991-92, 46 different teams from nine conferences and one independent have appeared on the schedule. Raycom has televised 104 games in its four seasons on ABC and each year the previous season's NCAA championship squad has been included on the schedule. Last season, Raycom won the regular-season college basketball ratings race 2.5 to 2.4 over CBS.
"We are ecstatic about PaineWebber's involvement with the ABC/ Raycom college basketball package," said Ray. "Last season, our package won the regular-season ratings race for the first time and we expect that trend to continue. We are confident that PaineWebber's investment in this package of college basketball will be returned many times over."
"The quality of this college basketball property complements our corporate reputation as a preeminent investment firm," said Johnston. "This entitlement will give us a significant presence with an audience that is highly educated and fits our client profile of serious investors. The original concept, together with the natural association with education, is a wonderful strategic match for us."
