Pain is the overlooked burden of millions.


Why do we commit millions of Americans to a sentence of the most cruel and unusual punishment Such punishment as would amount to torture or barbarity, any cruel and degrading punishment not known to the Common Law, or any fine, penalty, confinement, or treatment that is so disproportionate to the offense as to shock the moral sense of the community. ?

Pain is a protective mechanism of the body intended to prevent serious injury. If you burn your hand on a stove, you pull your hand away. If allowed to persist, pain causes serious consequences such as fever, weight loss, high blood pressure, chest pain, heart attack, pneumonia, constipation, immobility, weakness, and infection.

These are serious problems and warrant immediate therapy. The body of medical knowledge has increased geometrically. Hence the nonspecialist is unable to keep abreast Verb 1. keep abreast - keep informed; "He kept up on his country's foreign policies"

 of all the latest innovations in pain management. Chronic pain is the result of acute pain that does not resolve. We recommend a consultation if pain does not decrease or within 1 month of onset.

Lack of aggressive Pain Management leads to poor outcomes in all people. Activities of daily living are sacrificed. Incomes are decreased. Relationships are stressed. Sex is unheard of Not heard of; of which there are no tidings.

, or loss of life secondary to pain and suicide. There is lost productivity and income.

Last year, 1 in 4 people suffered from chronic pain. 30 percent of Americans retired to a life of suffering.

Barriers to pain management to overcome include a fear of addiction and dependence on medications. Perhaps the greatest barrier is lateral knowledge. The false belief that exposure to an addictive drug causes addiction. Indeed, the rate of addiction and pain patients is extremely low--less than 1%.

 patients are not addicted to blood pressure medications. Pain patients are not addicted to pain medications. Each of these groups takes their medications based on scientific evidence of improved life, improved thinking, and improved function. However, the pain patients are unfairly shunned by society--receiving funny looks by friends, family, and pharmacists.

What if you had a disease that would cause you financial, emotional, and physical ruin? You would insist on treatment. Lack of treatment of pain has caused untold devastation to millions of people who with treatment would have led more productive lives.
