The purpose of this book is to provide the general public with basic information about pain. This volume covers a wide range of pain-related topics in a very brief and general manner. The book is divided into 6 parts. Although each part is rather brief, the book covers an exceptional amount of material.

Part I contains general information about pain such as pain theories and treatments, what we know about pain, the differences in pain by gender and age, and roadblocks to pain relief. Part II covers specific types of pain and disorders characterized by pain. Thirty-three different diagnoses that may cause pain--from appendicitis Appendicitis Definition

Part III is about pain management. It contains a review of the principles of pain management, which is followed by several chapters addressing issues surrounding the use of medications, including risks of prescription drug prescription drug Prescription medication Pharmacology An FDA-approved drug which must, by federal law or regulation, be dispensed only pursuant to a prescription–eg, finished dose form and active ingredients subject to the provisos of the Federal Food, Drug,  abuse. Later chapters cover non-drug interventions such as acupuncture, biofeedback biofeedback, method for learning to increase one's ability to control biological responses, such as blood pressure, muscle tension, and heart rate. Sophisticated instruments are often used to measure physiological responses and make them apparent to the patient, who , and alternative therapies.

The final sections are: "Living With Pain" (part IV), "Pain Research" (part V), and "Additional Help and Information" (part VI).

The book is well organized, but most of the topics are covered too briefly. It should be noted that the majority of information is compiled from documents and excerpts from the publications of many different federal agencies (eg, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research is a division of the FDA that deals with the approval of drugs. CDER reviews New Drug Applications to ensure that the drugs are safe and effective. It is one of five Centers at the United States Food and Drug Administration. , National Institutes of Health, US Food and Drug Administration) and of various organizations and individuals (eg, American Academy The American Academy in Berlin is a non-partisan academic institution in Berlin. It was founded in September 1994 by a group of prominent Americans and Germans, among them Richard Holbrooke, Henry Kissinger, Richard von Weizsäcker, Fritz Stern and Otto Graf Lambsdorff and opened in  of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Academy of Pain Management). Each chapter carries the full citation on the first page.

The main audience for this book is the general public. Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants may find this book useful in the clinic as a reference full of information to share with patients. The book is written in language that patients can easily understand.
