Paget's disease of the nipple: analysis of survival factors. The treatment of Paget's disease Paget's disease n. 1. A disease, occurring chiefly in old age, in which the bones become enlarged and weakened, often resulting in fracture or deformation. Also called osteitis deformans. 2. by breast conservation therapy has gained support in recent literature. Multiple factors have been cited as indicators of high recurrence or poor candidates for breast conservation therapy, including palpable mass and underlying invasive carcinoma. A large series of patients was reviewed to assess the significance of these and other prognostic factors for survival. A retrospective institutional review of the tumor registry database and pathology database at a university medical center between 1980 and 2002. The survival of 15 patients with Paget's disease was compared with matched controls with central breast carcinoma. Fifteen patients with Paget's disease of the breast Paget's Disease of the Breast Definition Paget's disease of the breast is a rare form of breast cancer which makes up approximately 1-4 % of all breast tumors. (Group A) were compared with 34 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma confined to the nipple (Group B). Modified radical mastectomy mod·i·fied radical mastectomy n. Surgical removal of the entire breast and the lymphatic-bearing tissue in the armpit. modified radical mastectomy was performed in 85% of group A patients and 66% of group B patients. Recurrence rate in group A was 13% compared with 15% for group B. Average overall survival was 109 months in Group A and 81.7 months in group B, but when corrected for dates of diagnosis, this finding was not statistically significant. One patient with Paget's disease died from metastatic Metastatic The term used to describe a secondary cancer, or one that has spread from one area of the body to another. This review supports the evidence that underlying carcinoma in Paget's disease is a poor prognostic indicator and associated with increased recurrence rates. C.M. Copper, MD, and J.L.
