Paganism revived.Glasgow -- G.K. Chesterton once said that when people stop believing in God they do not believe in nothing; rather they believe in anything at all. Some Scots are returning to the paganism of the ancient priestly caste of Druids druids (dr `ĭdz), priests of ancient Celtic Britain, Ireland, and Gaul and probably of all ancient Celtic peoples, known to have existed at least since the 3d cent. BC. (which practiced human sacrifices). Driven out by St. Columba 1500 years ago, the modern Pagan Federation with its connections with witchcraft (Wicca), claims 2,000 devotees. The orgiastic or·gi·as·tic adj. 1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of an orgy. 2. Arousing or causing unrestrained emotion; frenzied. Druid Druid Member of a learned class of priests, teachers, and judges among the ancient Celtic peoples. The Druids instructed young men, oversaw sacrifices, judged quarrels, and decreed penalties; they were exempt from warfare and paid no tribute. Beltane festival in Edinburgh has attracted crowds for several years and now Glasgow has held a summer Wicca festival, accompanied by an academic conference on Rituals, Readings, and Reactions.
