Packard Bell NEC Files Patent Infringement Suit Against CTX International, Inc.


SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1998--Packard Bell NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

The lawsuit seeks an injunction restraining CTX from manufacturing, selling, or importing their desktop and portable computers, as well as substantial monetary damages Monetary damages, in civil law, refers to compensation given to an injured party by a liable party. The lawsuit asserts that desktop and portable computers that are imported into, manufactured, or sold in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , infringe five U.S. Patents including U.S. Patent Nos. 5,129,069; 5,123,092; 5,652,890; 5,303,171; and 5,561,361.

The patents being asserted by Packard Bell NEC cover key features in today's desktop and portable computers such as: (i) automatically reconfiguring a memory system of a computer; (ii) a computer interface for connecting a number of different peripheral devices to the computer; (iii) a computer power management system that allows a computer to power down into a suspend mode and then resume operation the same place; (iv) a portable computer system, enabling the computer to switch into a suspend mode upon lid closing and returning the computer to the operation mode and resuming applications upon lid opening; and (v) a variable battery charging system that maximizes the efficiency of a portable computer's battery pack. Packard Bell NEC's lawsuit asserts that desktop and portable computers manufactured by CTX infringe these patented technologies.
