Pacifiers and Breastfeeding.


It may be well to caution new parents on the use of pacifiers. While pacifiers sometimes help to provide a little peace, the American Academy of Pediatrics The American Academy of Pediatrics ("AAP") is an organization of pediatricians, physicians trained to deal with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. Its motto is: "Dedicated to the Health of All Children.  (AAP AAP - Association of American Publishers ) recently learned that babies who used pacifiers were less successful at nursing than those who didn't.

Researchers at the University of Rochester The University of Rochester (UR) is a private, coeducational and nonsectarian research university located in Rochester, New York. The university is one of 62 elected members of the Association of American Universities.  and the Children's Hospital A children's hospital is a hospital which offers its services exclusively to children. The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties.  in Cincinnati tracked 265 sets of breastfeeding mothers and their infants. Researchers concluded that the babies who used pacifiers nursed less often and for shorter periods of time. Many of those mothers complained of inadequate milk supply. Ultimately, the pacifier babies stopped nursing sooner than the nonpacifier babies.
