Pacific Pipeline welcomes public hearings on pipeline proposal.LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 1996--The decision by the Los Angeles City Council "All we've ever wanted," Shamas continued, "is an opportunity to have the pipeline judged on its merits. Heretofore, we've been denied that opportunity each time matters related to Pacific Pipeline have come before the Council." Shamas' comments were in response to the Council's unanimous (14-0) vote yesterday to refer to the Transportation and Environmental Quality Committees for public hearings, a motion by First District Councilman Mike Hernandez aimed at instituting a legal challenge to the project's Environmental Impact Report. The two committees have been instructed to hold public hearings on the motion and report back to Council within 30 days. "The City rightfully should ensure that its concerns are adequately addressed in the environmental review process," Shamas said. "But to signal that a legal challenge is contemplated before the project is even certified See certification. , before meetings between the Environmental Affairs Department and pipeline representatives to resolve the City's concerns, or before even one committee hearing to assess the merits of the project," Shamas continued, "is not how public policy should be determined." The California Public Utilities Commission The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC; also often commonly referred to as simply the PUC) [1] is a state Public Utilities Commission which regulates privately-owned utilities in the state of California, including electric power, and the U.S. Forest Service released their joint final Supplemental Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement Jan. 2, 1996. Shamas anticipates that the EIR EIR n. popular acronym for environmental impact report, required by many states as part of the application to a county or city for approval of a land development or project. (See: environmental impact report) will be certified by the PUC (Public Utility Commission) A regulatory body in every state in the U.S. that governs public utilities within its jurisdiction such as electricity, gas, oil, sewer, water, transportation and telephone service. Some states call it the Public Service Commission (PSC). in early March. Shamas also expressed "deep appreciation" for the public support shown at the hearing from communities along the pipeline route. Some 200 citizens, referred to by Watts resident Sweet Alice Harris as "the grassroots," attended the Council meeting to express their support for the pipeline proposal and opposition to the Hernandez motion. "The Pacific Pipeline people didn't come to us," Harris emphasized, "we found them." In her impassioned comments to Council members, she exclaimed, "You asked us to get involved. Well, we are involved. The grassroots has spoken. Let us win one. We need the jobs and we need you to help ensure that they (Pacific Pipeline) do what they said they're going to do."
